The mission of the Guatemalan Student Support Group is to provide for impoverished Guatemalan youth, mostly descendants of the ancient Maya, an opportunity to attend four years of high school and four years of college in the United States. Job training is not the object; neither is the immediate relief of poverty. Rather, the organization seeks to give its direct beneficiaries an opportunity to acquire the knowledge of history and world affairs, of politics and jurisprudence, of philosophy and economics, and, of science, literature, and the arts -- thus developing a cadre of well-educated professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds to act as a leaven for socioeconomic development in their own country.
